Abstract Art and the Human Psyche
There are many who don’t understand abstract art, and even others that do not consider it as a true form of art, but think of it more as child’s play. I know that I have heard people say in passing that abstract art is for people who cannot draw, and even others who have stated that their kid can do better than what they are looking at. The whole time I am thinking, I wish I could draw that badly or if my kid did that, we’d be rich! The fact is that these kinds of comments and statements truly only prove the ignorance or the speaker when it comes to art of this kind. Abstract art is far more complex than many give credit for and very difficult to capture in any medium whether it is on paper, with metal, bottle caps, wood, sand or whatever the artists chosen medium is.
An abstract artist does not just see things; he interprets them. A well done abstract art masterpiece is actually a true blend of human mind and visual arts. In fact it is more like a coming together of art and science. It is not essential to know the subject of the abstract art, what you really need to know is the kind of effect it induces.
Have you ever seen a piece of abstract art work that you were inexplicably drawn to? The strong colors, the medium used, or maybe it was the lines and curves that captured your attention. You may even have felt some kind of emotion looking at the artists work? This is because when your brain tries to decipher such a masterpiece it is actually forced to make new neural connections. These kind of masterpieces force the brain to activate new neurons as it tries to understand the complex patterns, lines and colors. In other words, it reprograms your mind. Moreover, indulging in abstract art also activates your creative juices and activates the right side of your brain, which is responsible for solving problems, creating new ideas, dreams, day dreams and much more.
So, next time you look at a piece of abstract art, try going inside those patterns and lines to find the true meaning meant by the artist. It will help you to understand the mind of the artist and help your own brain to become sharper.
